Winter is coming! To celebrate the joy of now disappearing snow, a selection of 8 prints, of which this is number 6, from the work of a virtually unknow designer and printer, Toru (Tohoru) Shimizu
Title: 冬競技 Fuyu kyōgi - Winter games, ca.1980
From Hellen Merrit's Guide:
Toru Shimizu was born in 1938 Toyama prefecture.
He was a self-taught hanga artist. His style is detailed and descriptive.
Series of prints include, "Snow Country (Yukiguni) 1971, Four Seasons in Japan (Nihon no Shiki) 1973-74, Autumn in Paris (Pari no Aki) 1974.
Very few works by him appeared online, but the designs are exquisite.
I will list it as silkscreen because I'm not sure whether it's a woodblock print or a silkscreen, so to be safe I'll mark it as silkscreen. The print is marked as hanga 版画 (lower right corner), and signed "Tohoru Shimizu".
Size 95 x 65 cm.
Printed on thick paper, when you pass your fingers on it, one can feel the texture of the relief ink.
No foxing, no tears.
